Back to School Kick-OffMore than 4,000 parents, students, staff and community members participated in the first annual Back-to-School Kick-Off on Saturday, Aug. 2. Although the event did not start until 9 a.m., families were lined up to get in as early as 7:45. Staff members from every district school, as well as Superintendent John L. Barry, members of the Board of Education, APS Leadership Team and APS Education Foundation greeted parents and students.

“Kudos to the School Services Team, family liaisons and our school staff and community members who made this day a success,” said Superintendent Barry.

More than 50 community groups greeted families, including the Community College of Aurora and Wells Fargo. Chief Dan Oates and other members of the Aurora Police Department, Colorado State Representative Karen Middleton and Aurora City Councilman Larry Beer also joined the fun. Children might not agree on the fun part, but parents appreciated Tri-County Health for providing immunizations. Staff from Carrabba’s, Chick-fil-a and Black-eyed Pea generously donated refreshments.

Many parents said they appreciated this effort to create a community-wide celebration before school started. Sable fifth grader Naadia summed it up best. “I like it here today. It’s fun and there are lots of cool games and nice people!”
