Healthy or Not? Students Volunteer at 9News Family Health Fair

A group of North Middle School students recently demonstrated the effects of smoking to visitors at the 9News Family Health Fair. Students volunteered their time to help those who stopped by for free and low-cost health screenings and education. Some of the North Middle students participated in a demonstration showing a healthy lung - and a diseased lung after 20 years of smoking.

The event supports a program new to North Middle School this year: the Academy of Health Sciences and Technology. The new curriculum falls under a $3.9 million Aurora LIGHTS grant, which is shining the light on health sciences and creating a pathway that leads students into health care professions. Those involved in the program include APS, the University of Colorado Denver Anschutz Medical Campus, Community College of Aurora, Metropolitan Community Provider Network, the Colorado Area Health Education Center System, and the Central Colorado Area Health Education Center.
