APS Showcased at National Conference
Technology is vital to learning in Aurora Public Schools. After a recent visit by representatives with the National Middle School Association (NMSA), APS was invited to demonstrate the use of technology in the classroom at the annual NMSA conference.
The event is billed as the “largest and most comprehensive middle level professional development opportunity in the world.” APS staff and students were showcased at the conference as part of the “21st Century Classroom.” A local architect built classrooms at the Colorado Convention Center for the NMSA conference. The high-tech classrooms were staffed by APS teachers and students. They demonstrated the use of visualizers, interactive whiteboards, virtual telecasts and podcasts.
“This technology allows us to compete on a global level. The kids love it - this allows them to be engaged and active,” said APS Superintendent John L. Barry.
APS is recognized as a tech-savvy school district, something district officials hope to build upon. “One of our goals is to bring 21st century technology into the hands of all of our teachers,” said Ivan Duran, APS Director of Instructional Technology.
The teachers and students were involved in authentic learning during the conference, aided by the latest in technology. During a virtual telecast, students interacted with their peers stationed at a different classroom, miles away.
“It’s cool communicating with other students from other classes,” said Jordan, a freshman at Aurora Central High School.
“I like working with the other students because I find out if I need to add anything to my story to make it better,” said Stefany, a freshman at Aurora Central High School.
