ING Unsung Heroes Teacher of the YearRangeview teacher Matthew Willis (pictured third from the left) has been recognized as one of the nation’s most innovative educators by the 2008 ING Unsung Heroes awards program. Willis was one of 100 winners who received a $2,000 award to help fund an innovative program.

Willis won the award for creating the “Rangeview History Day” project. The Rangeview history project is modeled after the National History Day program, which is celebrated on February 15. Each year more than half a million students, encouraged by thousands of teachers nationwide, participate in the NHD contest. More than 200 students entered Rangeview’s second annual History Day competition last year. The event showcased student theatrical performances, documentary films, Web sites, exhibits and research papers highlighting various aspects of world history.

The $2,000 award will go toward assisting students with research opportunities, travel materials and computers.

“Current research on best practices shows that students gain more knowledge through ‘doing’ history. The History Day Project allows students to research projects of their choice and develop the critical skills they will need to succeed in college.”
