APS Fights Back Against the Flu
A partnership involving Aurora Public Schools, The Children’s Hospital, University of Colorado Denver, University of Colorado Hospital and Fitzsimons Redevelopment Authority is protecting APS students and staff from an all-too familiar seasonal virus - influenza.
Flu vaccination clinics were recently held at Montview and Paris elementary schools.
“The shot didn’t hurt very much… it just felt like a pinch,” said Gabriela, a kindergarten student at Paris Elementary School.
The single best way to protect against the flu is to get vaccinated each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. About 2 weeks after vaccination, antibodies that provide protection against the flu virus develop in the body.
“This school flu clinic is a great opportunity for our nursing students to apply their skills outside of their courses,” said Dr. Gail Armstrong, Assistant Professor at the University of Colorado Hospital. “They also really enjoy working out in the community and helping the children.”
