Why College?
by Abigail Munguia, APS Communication Department intern
A question for some high school students is ‘why should I go to college?’ This question was answered as two dozen APS students participated in a scavenger hunt at the Community College of Aurora, during an event called the Xcel Energy Foundation Camp.
“This experience provides our students the chance to see that many opportunities are open to them. They can explore choices and take that next step in going to college,” said Melissa Geist, Director of APS Rebound Program.
The students enrolled in the APS Rebound program, an alternative program designed for expelled and dropout recovery students, took part in the activities in order to learn about the benefits of going to college.
“This is an opportunity to become more educated about the choices I have. I’m considering a career in photography and I’m really excited about visiting the Colorado Film School here at the college,” said Misty, an APS senior.
The students were split into groups that explored ten departments and programs on the CCA campus during the two-hour event. The day started at the Biology Building where students identified three internal organs. Also on the schedule was a trip to the Language Center, where the students learned how to say “thank you” in three different languages besides English - and a quick stop to the Colorado Film School.
Afterwards, the CCA faculty advised students about financial aid and career services.
“Our visit to the college gives me a chance to learn more about possible careers. I can find out more about the direction I want to take and what courses are available,” said Jose, an APS senior.
