The goal of Pilot Schools is simple: provide schools with autonomy and maximum control over their resources in exchange for increased accountability. The schools remain part of the district but are given more freedom, with the expectation that students will attain higher levels of academic achievement and exceed district averages within three years. The increased autonomy at each Pilot School will be implemented by a governing board using shared decision making.

“I am most excited to be putting our core beliefs into action for the benefit of our students. We are excited to build on the success we have experienced in science achievement … we believe that science is a powerful focus using technology to transform learning and it will provide relevance of study to the lives of students along with preparing our students to succeed in the 21st century.”
- Lisa Nieto
Fletcher Elementary Principal

Fletcher Elementary will make the change from a K-5 school into the following:

  • Fletcher Primary School: grades K-3
  • Fletcher Intermediate Science and Technology School: grades 4-8

For the 2009-10 school year, sixth and seventh grades will be added. Eighth grade will be added in 2010.
APS Pilot Schools are unique because they are a joint venture between the teachers association and the APS Board of Education. The most recent proposals received 100% support from Fletcher staff.

William Smith High School opened as the first APS Pilot School this year. Other existing APS schools may apply to convert into a Pilot School. APS can also open new schools under the Pilot School process.
