Jewell students convert Trash to TreesStudents in Shelley Jacobs’ fifth-grade class at Jewell Elementary participated in the recent “Trash to Trees” project at the Inverness Hotel. The project creates awareness of how to “Recycle, Reuse and Repurpose” items for the holidays and produce less waste.

Jewell students focused in their classroom on creating natural ornaments for a Christmas tree at the hotel. Following the theme of “From Tree to West M.S. students earn 1st Place in the Trash to Trees ProjectPaper to Tree,” the students found items from nature and trees and used them as ornaments.

Students also created ornaments from discarded Christmas cards and paper using their knowledge of 3-D geometry and origami paper folding.

On December 3, 2008, seven students took a trip to the hotel to decorate the tree with their natural and recycled ornaments. The tree will be on display for a silent auction from December 5-14, 2008, in the Inverness Hotel, at 200 Inverness Drive West, in Centennial.

West Middle Schools students also took part in the project and earned $400 for placing first in the category of “Best Use of One Recycled Object”.
