WILLIAM SMITH HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
WORKING SIDE-BY-SIDE WITH INTERNATIONAL ARTIST
A group of eight William Smith students will spend the next six weeks working with Homare Ikeda, an artist-in-residence at the Platte Forum in Denver. Ikeda, an artist from Yoron Island, near Okinawa, Japan, has been exhibited in galleries around the world including the Denver Art Museum, Saks Fifth Avenue in NY, Sabichira-kan in Japan and many other public and private collections throughout the country.
Ikeda has a ritual of doing eleven ink drawings every morning as a warm-up and inspiration for his art, and these drawings are then translated into large canvases and final pieces. He also records and activates the ink drawings in digital format, creating short animations summarizing each day’s work. As he works with the William Smith students, he will take them through his creative process and instruct them in the disciplines of ink drawing, painting and animation. He’ll then create side-by-side with them as the group prepares for an art exhibition, which will open on Thursday, March 5 and be displayed through March 20 at the Platte Forum Gallery (www.platteforum.org).
“This is such an amazing experience for the students. Homare engages them, makes them think differently and brings out the best in their artistic talents,” said teacher Michelle Mack.
“Going to Platte Forum twice a week gives me something to look forward to and I have the chance to use my imagination to create new works of art every session,” said student Desiree Dominguez.
