PARTNERS KEEP KIDS IN SCHOOL
Aurora Public Schools is making huge strides to curb truancy. Seventy-three percent of our schools showed some decrease or remained stable in the number of habitual truants from quarter one of last year to quarter one of this year.
All seven middle schools and all five high schools reduced the number of habitually truant students from quarter one of last year to quarter one of this year. This year at the secondary level, we had 73% fewer habitually truant students at the end of quarter one compared to the same time last year.
- APS middle schools have reduced the number of habitual truants by more than 83%.
- APS high schools have reduced the number of habitual truants by nearly 70%.
On Tuesday, February 3, APS Superintendent John L. Barry will join staff members for a door knocking campaign. They will knock on the doors of APS students who have been chronically truant this year. The goal is to invite these students back to school.
Prior to the door knocking campaign, Superintendent Barry will hold a news conference to discuss the many strategies that APS is using to keep kids in school.
Local media is invited to join Superintendent Barry and other APS staff members as they visit homes.
