Mentors on a Mission

PH Boston Mentors (8)Aurora Public Schools Maintenance and Facilities and Exterior Operations staff members say working for APS means more to them than just providing building support. They come together once a week to mentor a group of Boston K-8 students. The mentors combine their lunch hour and breaks to volunteer at the school.

They eat lunch in the cafeteria, play a game called “four square” outside and talk to the students. Conversations range from the kind of work the staff members are involved in to what the students are learning in school.

“We need them to help us. It makes me feel excited and happy! We have fun,” said Boston fourth-grader Marcario.

The eight mentors work with a group of six students. “It’s really neat, seeing the kids outside of school. They come up and give us hugs,” said Direct Support Coordinator Steve Allen.

This is the third year for the Boston mentoring program.
