Ready, Set, Ski!
Vassar Elementary students with autism are learning the skills needed to go cross-country skiing. The group recently hosted the National Sports Center for the Disabled (NSCD). The pros are teaching the 20 students the skills needed to go cross-country skiing.
NSCD introduced the equipment to the students inside where they practiced some basic moves, and then they moved outside. In the coming weeks, the students will head to the mountains to ski at Devil’s Thumb Ranch, near Winter Park.
“We look forward to going. It’s such an exciting time! We hope to do this for many years to come,” said Vassar Teacher Emily Katz.
Katz said the students learn the basics of cross-country skiing, but also gain independence. When they return from the mountains, the students will put together a book featuring photos from their trip.
