Student Authors Present at Language Arts Conference

Cruz Javier Torres reads his published piece “Last Buena Noche” to an audience of teachers and students at the Colorado Language Arts Society conference. It was a beautiful tribute to his Mexican traditions.
Student authors from Aurora Central recently participated in the Colorado Language Arts Society Conference. The group attended a teen writing seminar featuring young adult novelist Sharon Draper. The students authored the book, “Melting Box of Crayons: True Stories and Poems by Urban High School Writers.” As part of the conference, students read their stories from the book.

Brandon Cropp reads his published piece “My Bleeding Love,” a love poem about a middle-school crush, and followed up by singing a poem he is working on currently.

After the reading of their published pieces, the students participate in a signing session, autographing the book for the audience members.

After the hour session, Ms. Nardello, Javier, Teresita, Brandon and Kayla take time to celebrate with a group photo.

Kayla Nagy demonstrates her bravery by reading an emotional piece titled “Disappearing Dad.” Each time she reads the poem, it helps her heal from the experience.

Teresita Sanchez reads her published poem, “My Mom is a Rose.” Later, she followed up with a poem she is currently working on as an extension of this piece.

After participating in a writing workshop with young adult author Sharon Draper, students pose for a picture holding “Melting Box of Crayons,” while Ms. Draper displays her latest novel, “Copper Sun.“
