APS Grad Thankful to Have Junior Achievement Opportunity

JA box 2APS Alumni Paolo Diaz started out as a volunteer with Junior Achievement not knowing who they were or what they did. His high school friend, Jennifer Venerable, had set up a J.A. class as a volunteer.

“I only volunteered because my friend worked for them,” recalls Diaz. “After I taught my first class, I thought it was the most amazing thing because the information we provided was very relevant and
important to students!”

Diaz now works with Venerable bringing together business leaders and classroom teachers. Diaz is the elementary and middle school Program Manager and Venerable coordinates volunteers at the high school level.

JA reps for APSDiaz is responsible for providing elementary and middle school programs to multiple school districts in Denver, including Aurora. In his free time, he enjoys attending The Aurora Chamber of Commerce’s Government Affairs and Education committee meetings and Virginia Court PTO meetings.

During the 2007 - 2008 APS school year, fourteen elementary schools, two middle schools, and each of the high schools enjoyed programs led by Junior Achievement Volunteers.

“The benefit of having Junior Achievement visit my classroom is to show students about their community and who the workers are,” says 5th Grade Fulton teacher Stella Cypher. “It also shows the students options for their future.”

To learn more about Junior Achievement and local volunteer opportunities, you can contact Paolo Diaz via e-mail, PDiaz@jacolorado.org, or by phone, (303) 260-6287. You can also visit the Junior Achievement website, http://www.jacolorado.org.

Laura Kelley is a classroom teacher at Fulton Elementary School.
