Peoria Celebrates Walking Win
Peoria Elementary School is the big winner in a recent walking competition. Former Denver Nugget player Mark Randall and television star Maya Leon Meis from the program “Los Secretos de Maya” congratulated the school’s third, fourth and fifth graders who walked more than 13,000,000 steps in six weeks. The program is part of a “Get Up and Go” challenge coordinated by the City of Aurora’s America on the Move office.
The students battled against Montview Elementary School students in the friendly competition that taught them how walking contributes to a healthier lifestyle. Peoria Elementary students walked 13,639,069 steps, compared with Montview Elementary students’ 13,449,314 steps. Collectively, students at the two schools walked 13,544 miles.
At the celebration, Randall, who represents the Denver Nuggets Community Ambassadors Program, talked about being active and making healthy choices.
Meis, star of “Los Secretos de Maya,” which airs locally on PBS and Azteca America Colorado, discussed nutrition. Adrian Romero, the show’s producer, served as Master of Ceremonies.
Peoria and Montview students used a pedometer to track their daily steps both on paper and online from February 1 to March 11. To motivate students, physical education teachers incorporated the program into their classes and school staff encouraged participation.
Other APS schools that competed in past “Get Up and Go” challenges include Crawford, Paris and Virginia Court elementary schools.
America on the Move is a national nonprofit organization founded in 2003 to improve health and quality of life by promoting healthful eating and active living. Originating in Colorado, the program has millions of participants from all 50 states. The program focuses on increasing daily steps and decreasing calorie intake to benefit health positively and effectively stop weight gain.
