PH Fletcher The Denver Foundation (16)Aurora Public Schools is celebrating the continued support of the district’s Pilot Schools. Fletcher Elementary School, currently a K-5, will open as two separate schools sharing the same facility beginning in the 2009-10 school year.

The Denver Foundation awarded $18,000 to APS in support of the Pilot Schools model. The grant will enable a facilitator to assist potential Pilot Schools with the tremendous amount of preparation, planning and marketing that is required to both receive district approval, as well as successfully implement the Pilot School model into the specific school.

The Denver Foundation has also supported Fletcher for many years by awarding the school a number of “Strengthening Neighborhood” grants. The group is continuing to support the school with an additional $3,000 grant this year.

“We can’t do it alone - we need partnerships like the one with The Denver Foundation. They are keeping Fletcher parents and community members active in the school,” said Superintendent John L. Barry.

Fletcher Elementary will make the change from a K-5 school into the following:

  • Fletcher Primary School: grades K-3
  • Fletcher Intermediate Science and Technology School: grades 4-8
  • For the 2009-10 school year, sixth and seventh grades will be added
  • Eighth grade will be added in 2010

William Smith High School opened as the first APS Pilot School this year. Other existing APS schools may apply to convert into a Pilot School. APS can also open new schools under the Pilot School process.
