APS Adopts 2009-10 Construction Calendar

Construction CalendarOn April 21, the APS Board of Education approved a modified calendar to be used by Columbia Middle School for the 2009-10 school year. The calendar is required to allow time for the school’s bond construction project to be completed.

Columbia bond improvements will include repairs to its heating, air conditioning and mechanical systems, most of which have not been upgraded since the school was constructed in 1982.

On this construction calendar, classes will end on April 29, 2010. The last work day for teachers will be May 3, which is a teacher in-service day. To compensate for the early dismissal, additional time will be added to each school day. The calendar includes 1,127 instructional hours per year, which exceeds the CDE requirement of 1,056 hours for middle school students.

Following are key points about the construction calendar:

  • Students will start classes on Aug. 5, 2009.
  • Students will have the same fall, winter and spring breaks as on the APS Conventional Calendar.
  • The new start and end times will be 7:15 a.m. to 2:50 p.m.
  • The calendar will be in effect for one year only.

The calendar was developed with staff and parent input to ensure that the modified schedule would not negatively impact student learning. To view the construction calendar, visit www.aps.k12.co.us/district-info/calendar.html.
