Teacher Appreciation Week“A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops,” said the great American writer, Henry Brooks Adams.

Thank you to the nearly 2,000 APS teachers and 48 principals who inspire, motivate, guide and influence our students every day.

APS joins thousands of communities across the nation in honoring teachers and principals on Tuesday, May 5, 2009. This day marks the celebration of National Teacher Day and National School Principals Day.
National Teacher Appreciation Week is May 3-9.

Ninety-eight percent of APS teachers are highly qualified under federal No Child Left Behind guidelines. That means they have special certifications and are knowledgeable and skilled in each subject they teach.

  • 53% hold bachelor’s degrees
  • 46% hold master’s degrees
  • 1% hold doctorate degrees

Teacher Appreciation WeekStaff Members Talk about their Favorite Teachers

“I know the joy of teachers who have made a difference in my life and the joy of graduating from schools with an excitement for the future. Mr. Banachek made history class come alive in high school because he acted out what we were studying, using costumes and antics-you remember people like that and you are thankful for them.”
- John L. Barry, Superintendent of Schools

.

“I remember by high school English teacher Mr. Brown. I learned about Shakespeare, essay writing and public speaking. However, what I remember most is that he treated me like a friend.”
- Carl Walker
Oracle, SFE, Job Postings Analyst

.Teacher Appreciation Week

“I knew the moment I met my fifth-grade teacher that I would become a teacher. She treated me like I was her child and as a result I treat my students as if they are my children. I will never forget her.”
- Peggy Hassan, Side Creek Elementary teacher

.

“My middle and high school social studies and English teachers gave me a love of history, people and politics. They inspired me so much that I majored in U.S. history and political science in college.”
- Anthony Sturges, Chief Operating Officer

.Teacher Appreciation Week

“The teacher who inspired me the most was my eighth grade language arts and social studies teacher in Omaha, Nebraska. Mrs. Bonner had high expectations for every student to be a proficient or advanced learner, and there were no exceptions. All students knew how much she cared, and she consistently reminded us of the importance of succeeding in the classroom and how it would pay off later in life. Eighteen years later, I taught Mrs. Bonner’s grandson at Lansing Elementary, and I had the same high expectations of him-Mrs. Bonner would have been proud of me.”
- Linda Harvey, Kenton Elementary principal
