Kids Enjoy a “Day in the Life” Experience with APS Staff
On April 22, workplaces around the nation observed “Take our Children to Work Day.” Several APS staff members took the opportunity to give their children a firsthand look at work experience and career opportunities.
Elijah Nabors, son of Design and Construction assistant Crystal Nabors, spent the morning working with various design and construction staff in the office. In the afternoon, Elijah joined staff at the new P-8 school site where he observed, up close and personal, many kinds of earth-moving equipment used at the site. He saw a caisson drilling rig boring 30-foot deep holes to bedrock, placement of the reinforcing steel in the caisson hole, and a concrete pumping truck getting ready to pump concrete into the caisson holes.
“Elijah asked many good questions, and we enjoyed explaining what was happening at the site,” said Bob Barwig, APS project coordinator for the new P-8 school.
Elijah will be a kindergarten student at Yale Elementary in August 2009.
Two West Middle School students, Osvaldo G. and Giovani H., shadowed APS Web manager Rich Blegen. The students learned the elements of web design and management and even made a web video.
“Elijah was a terrific help, assisting with a number of duties throughout the office. Although he has only just turned five, he was extremely well-behaved, and is certainly Mr. Personality. Elijah is a credit to his Mom. It was a pleasure to see all the children experiencing a day in the life of their parent at work.”

“I really enjoyed their enthusiasm and knowledge about the web and their interest in the field of web design. They even taught me a thing or two about the web.”
