Altura Elementary Forges International Connection
Altura Elementary students are partnering with a school in Juarez, Mexico to help children who can’t afford basic school supplies.
The partnership is the inspiration of Altura Elementary principal Mary Ann Maddy, who traveled to Juarez in 2008. “These families live in the most abject poverty with no plumbing and cisterns for water. My heart went out to the children, and I left with a commitment to help them in some way,” said Maddy.
She shared her vision with Altura staff and families, and the school community has responded with generosity. The student council took on the project of assisting a school in Juarez and collected donations to purchase school supplies. Parent volunteers collected supplies and children’s books in Spanish and helped package them for shipping.
Altura students plan to start regular communication with the Juarez school children through a pen pal exchange.
