ElectricalDelores Brooks needed help so she submitted an application to “Rebuild Together” to fix her house. Her husband had been hospitalized on and off for many years and the house and yard were in need of some major repairs. The application was approved and the house rebuild was scheduled for April 29. Unfortunately, Mr. Brooks passed away on April 18, so the rebuild was rescheduled for May 9.

CJ Anderson, Casimar Brown-Scott, Yolanda Sanchez, Irma Ferrufino, Alex Moore, Ozzy Trujillo, Brent Goldensoph, Thomas Riam, Terence Aneke, Oscar Collazo and George Webb from Rangeview High School were joined by their teacher, Matthew Willis, along with volunteers from Kaiser Permanente to rebuild Brooks’ house. The rebuild started at 8 a.m. Saturday morning and continued well into the evening.

LandscapingAt the end of the day, Mrs. Brooks thanked the students. “God bless each of you for your help,” she said. When students Alex, Thomas and Casimar went to wish her the best and thank her, Mrs. Brooks began to cry and then hugged many of the students to show her appreciation.

“These kids never sat all day. Every one of them worked hard and when they were done they came and asked what they could do next. Please bring them again,” said Scott Nelson, one of the leaders of the rebuild and a Kaiser employee. Angela Nelson, House Leader for the project, personally asked many of the students to return for the next rebuild in the fall. One Kaiser representative was overheard saying, “These kids exemplify the school and our future.”

Everybody was exhausted at the end of the day but we all walked away feeling satisfied by the experience of helping a fellow human being.

“Rebuild Together” is a non-profit organization that helps needy people throughout the Denver area and nationally. If you are interested in helping this fall, please find out more about the organization and register at www.rebuildingdenver.org.
