Edited 1Summer brought another Aurora LIGHTS opportunity. During June and July, forty APS high school students participated in the six-week Aurora LIGHTS Summer Institute. The institute offered a unique learning experience that consisted of a four-week “day camp” on the University of Colorado Denver Anschutz Medical Campus, followed by a two-week residential experience on a college campus.

During the Summer Institute, the students, all interested in pursuing healthcare careers, engaged in experiences that focused on college readiness through increasing proficiency levels in mathematics, science and language while preparing for professional internships. The students completed their internships during the final two weeks of the institute at Metro Community Provider Network clinics, and in clinical and research settings on the Anschutz Medical Campus.

The Aurora LIGHTS Summer Institute is a collaboration between Aurora Public Schools and the Colorado Area Health Education Center on the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. Selection criteria for the Summer Institute included recommendations from teachers and a commitment to active participation, punctuality, excellent behavior, and parental support.

The Summer Institute is an Aurora LIGHTS pathway opportunity. The mission of the P-20 Aurora LIGHTS Health Sciences Pathway is to support and guide APS students to medical and allied health sciences professions - through rigorous academic programs, associated field experiences and exposure to career opportunities. The Aurora LIGHTS Pathway is supported by exceptional APS teachers, and strong university and community partnerships.

The P-20 Aurora LIGHTS Health Sciences Pathway Community includes:

  • Laredo, Montview, Paris, and Park Lane elementary schools
  • North Middle School Health Sciences & Technology Campus
  • Aurora Central, Hinkley and William Smith high schools
  • Pickens Technical College
  • Community College of Aurora and UCD-Anschutz Medical Center partners
  • Metro Community Provider Network
