WSHS Students Meet Outward Bound Challenge
by Lauren Victor, William Smith High School Development Director
On August 19-20, fifteen juniors and seniors from William Smith High School completed Outward Bound’s Insight Program at Denver Park and Recreation’s Genesee Experiential Education Center. For most students it was their first time camping, but from the start they formed a cohesive group up for gaining new experiences and knowledge.
Together, they completed challenges on a low ropes and high ropes course, worked through numerous team building initiatives and completed a two hour solo project. William Smith staff members noticed natural leaders emerge throughout the program, with strong leadership skills exhibited by various students stepping up in order to achieve group objectives. Despite having to lick their bowls clean in order to abide by Leave No Trace standards, the students successfully developed a sense of community, with many students finding common interests amongst each other that they otherwise didn’t know existed.
