APS Continues Troops to Teachers Partnership
APS continues to reach into the ranks of the armed services to create a more diverse teaching staff. Troops to Teachers is a Colorado Department of Education hire-in-advance program. It helps school districts recruit quality teachers for schools that serve students from low-income families, while relieving teacher shortages and assisting military personnel in making successful transitions to second careers in teaching.
Depending on their educational background, military retirees can be teaching students in as little as nine months. Troops to Teachers helps retirees find military friendly schools, online courses and scholarships.
“Troops to Teachers is an outstanding program and we are proud to partner with them to provide meaningful opportunities to those who have proudly served our country,” said Colorado Commissioner of Education Dwight D. Jones.
Currently, APS has three teachers working as part of the Troops to Teachers program. They are employed at Altura and Elkhart elementary schools and Hinkley High School. Two other employees under the APS Troops to Teachers program are currently deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq.
