During the first week of November, eight William Smith sophomores spent the school week at Outward Bound’s snow-covered Leadville mountain center. These brave students endured sleeping in tents for the length of the program, only using clothing and personal gear that could fit in a hiking pack.
Students learned about leadership styles, community, and interpersonal and outdoor skills throughout the week. Through low and high ropes courses, orienteering and rock climbing, students learned about their own limitations, as well as how to constructively support their peers. By the last full day they were given complete responsibility with planning a difficult hike and confidently met the challenge.
