Students, Staff and Community Members Give Back During the Holidays
S
tudents, staff, community members and businesses made the holidays a little brighter for some APS students.
- The Student Council at Jewell sponsored a canned food drive and collected more than 2,400 cans. They donated the food to the local United Way distribution site and to the Colfax Project. These two food pantries distributed the food to families in the Aurora Community.
- Staff from Sixth Avenue helped 61 children have a happy holiday season. Staff members donated nearly $1,900 and also provided clothes, shoes and toys for needy children.
- Gateway H.S. senior Taran Crawford prepared food baskets for needy families with the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity. Crawford’s photo was featured in the Denver Post.
- Boulder resident Sheila Fortune donated a gift to every student at Boston K-8. Each year Fortune identifies a school and provides age/gender appropriate gifts for each student.
- Montview, Paris and Park Lane elementary school students will spend the winter break curled up with a good book, thanks to APS community partners. A group consisting of University of Colorado Hospital, The Children’s Hospital, University of Colorado Denver, Fitzsimons Redevelopment Authority and Forest City Stapleton, Inc. are providing books to every student. Community partners met with the students and their new books to celebrate the joy of reading.
- APS students at Fletcher Primary School are staying warm this winter, thanks to Aurora community members. The group recently donated 400 hats to students, as part of the “Fletcher Hat Project.”
- Piece Makers, a local knitting group, donated hats to all the pre-school students at Peoria Elementary School.
- State Farm Insurance provided $750 in Wal-Mart gift cards to support APS families during the holidays.
- The Alyssa Cares Foundation gave each of the more than students at Paris Elementary the opportunity to choose one book from the giant library they have compiled. Private and corporate donations have allowed the family to buy thousands of books to give away to students, in hopes of growing each student’s love of reading.
- Students and staff at Altura Elementary remembered the animals this holiday season. They collected donations of pet food, water dishes, beds, toys and kitty litter to our four-legged friends at the Aurora Animal Shelter.
APS Students Turn Trash into Trees
- Students at Jewell Elementary participated in the “Trash to Trees” project at the Inverness Hotel. The project creates awareness of how to “Recycle, Reuse and Repurpose” items for the holidays and produce less waste.
- West College Preparatory Academy students also took part in the “Trash to Trees” project at the Inverness Hotel. West students won first place for their recycling efforts.
