APS Leads the Way with Energy Conservation EffortsAurora Public Schools is rapidly becoming a leader among Colorado school districts for its energy awareness and conservation efforts. APS energy conservation standards are also beginning to pay off in big savings across the district.

APS Energy Consultant Tim “Bo” Bacon credits APS’ success to improved operational practices, increased teacher and staff education and awareness, and facility improvements.

Recent accomplishments in the area of energy conservation include:

  • APS has achieved electricity cost savings of nearly $197,000 for the first quarter of 2009-10 as compared with the first quarter of 2007-08; and nearly $86,000 as compared to the first quarter of 2008-09.
  • Since 2007, APS has received nearly $250,000 in rebates through an energy-saving partnership with XCEL Energy.
  • APS received $5,250 in XCEL rebate checks for relamping projects at Arkansas, Clyde Miller, Jewell and Yale elementary schools. The rebate paid for half the cost of the new lamps, which save 12.5 percent on lighting costs at each of the schools.
  • Vassar Elementary has created the “Ready Recyclers” conservation program. Affective Needs students collect paper to recycle and plant a symbolic tree in front of the school for every 150 pounds of paper saved. To date, the school has planted seven trees in the Vassar “forest”.
  • APS has 14 schools and two support sites that are voluntarily developing site-specific, structured energy conservation plans as part of the district’s Green Star program. Congratulations to:
