Keeping Kids in School
Aurora Public Schools is making huge strides to curb truancy. Sixty-two percent of APS schools reported no habitual truants or showed some decrease in the percentage of habitual truants compared to last year.
Six of seven middle schools and all five high schools had no habitual truants or showed some decrease in the percentage of habitual truants, compared to last year. This year, APS had nearly 20% fewer habitually truant students at the end of this semester compared to last year. In fact, APS middle schools have reduced the number of habitual truants by 43%.
APS Superintendent John L. Barry recently joined staff members for a door knocking campaign. The groups knocked on the doors of APS students who have been chronically truant this year and invited the students back to school.
