Tollgate Elementary School is in their first year of Expeditionary Learning. The Expeditionary Learning Philosophy is based on 10 design principles to guide our learning. Recently, Tollgate hosted a family night that focused on the design principle:
I understand the importance of the Natural World.
We respect the world around us.
We take care of the Earth for ourselves and other people.
As a celebration of the Natural World, students planted trees and basil with their families and friends. The Metro Million Tree Initiative donated six large trees to plant, one for each grade level K-5. Aurora Public Schools Exterior Operations graciously dug the holes, placed the trees and staked them. Sarah Davis from the Mile High Million Tree Initiative supervised each grade level as the children took turns backfilling the holes. The children named their trees and talked about how big the tree would be when they come back to visit when they are in high school.
Dinner was provided by the Texas Roadhouse for a very affordable amount. After dinner, families mingled together in the warm spring evening watching their children planting and playing. Over 300 people attended the event.
The staff and students at Tollgate School of Expeditionary Learning would like to thank The Mile High Million Tree Initiative, Aurora Public Schools Exterior Operations and Texas Roadhouse for making our event so successful.
