Parents and students had a great time at Fletcher Elementary School’s math night on September 25, 2008. Students taught their parents how to play the math stations to help with the understandings of how math is taught and how student’s learn math concepts.
They played Ten Go Fish, Multiplication Madness, Bean toss, and several others. The parents were given copies of the games to take home and continue playing with their children.
Two robots, Honey Bee and Moo Cow visited Fletcher’s math night and played an estimating distance game with the students. The robots were on loan from Tim Greenshields, an instructor of Robotics from Lesley University.
At the end of the evening the parents and students took part in a raffle for various items including an Ipod, robot kits, digital camera, and many math related games. A student’s response to math night was, “When is the next math night that was fun?” ]]>
Christian Velazquez: “My lighthouse is 37 inches or 91 cm. It is red, white, and blue. It is called Cape Neddick. We studied the Northeast Region. Lighthouses are in the Northeast Region. It helps the ships see where land is.”
Alfonso Campos: “This week in social studies we made lighthouses. Mine and Cindy’s lighthouse was interesting. It was red and blue. It was 32 inches tall. It has a platform on top. That week I learned that lighthouses help sailors see all around them and warn of land.”
Alexandra Fernandez: “…Before they made lighthouses when boats came from other places, a lighthouse wouldn’t be there and they would crash and die. But now that we have lighthouses, we can know when we are close to land.”
Marcelo Sanchez: “My lighthouse is blue and white. My lighthouse is 2 feet. My lighthouse’s job is to make boats not hit the land. In the night the light spins around. People can visit the lighthouse.”
Esperanza Torres: “We studied the Northeast’s lighthouses because lighthouses help ships know that there is land, rocks and dirt.”
