It is the annual tradition of Fletcher Elementary to celebrate the winter break with Pajama Day on the last day of school for the calendar year. Staff and students alike come to school in pajamas, robes and comfortable attire. Reading along with a little eating and sipping of hot cocoa is the order of the day. This year Fletcher had over 25 guests to help us celebrate books. Each classroom had a guest reader visit to share a book or two and talk about what their job is in the community. Our guest readers came from the Aurora Police Department, Aurora Public Library, University Hospital/Radiation and Oncology Clinic, Aurora Parks and Recreation, RE/MAX, community business members, family members of Fletcher, Aurora School Board members, and Aurora Public Schools employees that work at non-school sites. Each classroom also had a community member or parent come to help pass out the gift bags that were filled with donated gifts for every one of the 500 plus students.

Parents and students had a great time at Fletcher Elementary School’s math night on September 25, 2008. Students taught their parents how to play the math stations to help with the understandings of how math is taught and how student’s learn math concepts.
They played Ten Go Fish, Multiplication Madness, Bean toss, and several others. The parents were given copies of the games to take home and continue playing with their children.
Two robots, Honey Bee and Moo Cow visited Fletcher’s math night and played an estimating distance game with the students. The robots were on loan from Tim Greenshields, an instructor of Robotics from Lesley University.
At the end of the evening the parents and students took part in a raffle for various items including an Ipod, robot kits, digital camera, and many math related games. A student’s response to math night was, “When is the next math night that was fun?”

Last week Ms. Martin’s class built models of lighthouses to support what they were learning about the Northeast region of the United States. Here are some pictures and quotes from the students about this project.

Christian Velazquez: “My lighthouse is 37 inches or 91 cm. It is red, white, and blue. It is called Cape Neddick. We studied the Northeast Region. Lighthouses are in the Northeast Region. It helps the ships see where land is.”

Alfonso Campos: “This week in social studies we made lighthouses. Mine and Cindy’s lighthouse was interesting. It was red and blue. It was 32 inches tall. It has a platform on top. That week I learned that lighthouses help sailors see all around them and warn of land.”

Alexandra Fernandez: “…Before they made lighthouses when boats came from other places, a lighthouse wouldn’t be there and they would crash and die. But now that we have lighthouses, we can know when we are close to land.”

Marcelo Sanchez: “My lighthouse is blue and white. My lighthouse is 2 feet. My lighthouse’s job is to make boats not hit the land. In the night the light spins around. People can visit the lighthouse.”

Esperanza Torres: “We studied the Northeast’s lighthouses because lighthouses help ships know that there is land, rocks and dirt.”

The whole 4th grade walked to the Martin Luther King library. We arrived at the library. When we got inside we sat down. He told us that we would be reading a story so we stepped into the story room we read 3 stories. Then he showed us the children’s area one thing we learned was that if we see a adult we must tell a librarian because they can snatch you up and you don’t want that to happen. Next, they showed us the adult area, they also warned us to be sure that we stay away because they and we are in easier reach of the crazy people. Then comes the check out rules you can check out up to 40 books and movies, and did I mention you can pick out tapes and movies. Last but not least we you can check your book out for free with your new library card.
