Hinkley High School

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Program is a rigorous, Pre-university course of study, leading to examinations that meet the needs of highly motivated secondary school students. A diploma is awarded upon successful completion of the program. The IB program is a district wide program offered at Hinkley High School. This program was new to Aurora Public Schools in 1995-96 and during its first year offered Pre-IB courses to 27 freshmen representing all seven middle schools. Demographic statistics about current IB follow after the budget on the following page. In 2005-2006, 180 students were enrolled in the IB program, grades 9-12.The International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO), a non-profit educational foundation based in Switzerland, offers the diploma program for students in the final two years of secondary school. A comprehensive two-year curriculum allows graduates to fulfill requirements of various national education systems. The diploma model is based on the pattern of no single country bit incorporates the best elements of many. The diploma is recognized in most countries and grew out of both practical and educational concerns in international school settings.

The program is available in English, French, and Spanish. The IBO provides curriculum and assessment development, teacher training and information seminars, electronic networking and other educational services to some schools in several countries around the world. The organization’s cademic programs aim to awaken the intelligence of young people and teach them to relate the content of the classroom to the realities of the world outside. Comprehensive and balanced curricula coupled with challenging assessments have established the IBO as a unique institution in the arena of international education.Beyond the intellectual rigor and high academic standards that are the organization’s hallmark, strong emphasis is placed on the ideals of international understanding and responsible citizenship. The desired profile of the IB student is that of a critical and compassion thinker, an informed participant in local and world affairs who’s values the shared humanity that binds all people together while respecting the variety of cultures and attitudes that makes for the richness of life.
