The International Baccalaureate Organization aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. Aurora Hills Philosophy
Aurora Hills is one of only 10 authorized IB schools in Colorado that offer the Middle Years Programme, a comprehensive program for students between the ages of 11 and 16. The MYP is certified by the International Baccalaureate Organization. Aurora Hills provides a whole school MYP philosophy, where all students participate in the program. It is one of the few schools in the state that offer the whole school approach. The Aurora Hills MYP offers students a challenging academic program that focuses on developing critical thinking skills. Students are enrolled in standards-based, districtapproved courses that are organized within MYP subject areas. Aurora Hills MYP offers students:
• a focus on academics in eight core subjects, including a foreign language.
• an opportunity to enroll in honors classes in all core subjects.
• outstanding teachers who present instruction in thematic units to reinforce learning.
• an approach that develops critical thinking skills and important life skills.
• intercultural awareness and understanding of responsible global citizenship.
• knowledge and skills needed to participate actively in a changing world.
• priority access to the Hinkley High School IB-MYP (provides the last two years of the five-year program).
IB-Middle Years Programme
Application Process
Aurora Public Schools students who reside within the Aurora Hills attendance area are automatically enrolled in the Middle Years Programme. Students who reside outside of the Aurora Hills attendance area will need to apply for open enrollment and submit an application for MYP admission. If openings are available, Aurora Hills will contact students about the next steps for admission. The Middle Years Programme is designed to give students a well-rounded education, while focusing on understanding in eight core subjectsareas. The subject areas are:
• Language A – English
• Language B – French or Spanish
• Sciences
• Humanities – Geography and History
• Mathematics
• Arts – Art, Drama and Music
• Physical Education
• Technology
All subjects cover common thematic units, based
on the five areas of interaction:
• Community and Service
• Approaches to Learning (Study Skills)
• Homo Faber (Human Ingenuity)
• Environment
• Health and Social Education
This unique, integrated approach to learning emphasizes intellectual rigor and high academic standards. In addition, a strong emphasis is placed on the ideals of international understanding and responsible citizenship. IB-MYP students are challenged to become active and compassionate thinkers and lifelong learners who understand and appreciate other people for their cultural differences.
Honors Classes
Aurora Hills students may be enrolled in honors classes for science, social studies, literacy and math based on the following criteria:
• CSAP scores
• Grades in core academic subjects
• Teacher recommendation
• Student desire and motivation
