One from ACHS goes to National Youth Science Camp
March 16, 2009

Over the weekend our very own Christian Pedroza was chosen to represent Colorado this summer at the National Youth Science Camp.
The National Youth Science Camp is an intense residential science education program for young scientists the summer after they graduate from high school. Each year two graduating high school science students from each state are selected through a very intense process to attend. The National Youth Science Camp offers hands-on small-group learning experiences, a provocative lecture series, and a challenging outdoor program. The hands-on experiences and lectures expose delegates to current work across the spectrum of scientific disciplines. Visiting scientists are invited based on their reputation as leaders in their fields and on their ability to share up-to-date research with the delegates. For more information go to

A cheap, highly addictive drug known as “cheese” heroin has killed numerous teenagers over the last several months. During the period of August, 2005, through June, 2007, 21 teenagers died in Dallas alone and the drug is spreading into our area. In Dallas, “cheese” addicts are as common as those seeking help for a marijuana addiction.
Cheese heroin is a combination of black tar heroin that is crushed with over-the-counter medications that contain antihistamines and sedatives, such as Tylenol PM. The sedative effects of the heroin mixed with the sleep aids is potentially deadly. Your body gets two downers at once. It starts slowing down everything inside your body and eventually slows down the heart until it stops beating.
Drug pushers cooked this mixture up especially for kids. With black tar heroin you have to cook, mix with liquid and inject. Many kids are not wild about needles so here is the alternative. Cheese heroin is snorted. Drug dealers are targeting teenagers with this cheap heroin, with a seeminly benign name: “cheese”. And because the teens are unaware of its potential dangers… the street dealers don’t care if they sell you a lethal dose.
Education is the best defense against this drug. Don’t risk your life for this one high.
