UnitedStream Login

UnitedStreaming

THIS INFORMATION IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR ANYONE WANTING TO USE UNITED STREAMING.  PLEASE READ ALL OF THE FOLLOWING VERY CAREFULLY.           1.  Teachers wanting to use United Streaming must create your own unique username and password (this will allow you to download videos to your local computer - the trial membership does not give you this latitude)      NOTE:  These steps are for Teachers/Staff at ACHS.  Parents and students skip to Step 3.
  • a.  to create a username and password go to http://www.unitedstreaming.com/and at the upper right hand side of the screen find a box “NEW USERS”
  • b.  in the space for Passcode enter -  (contact jdwollbrinck@aps.k12.co.us for passcode)  -  and click once on GO
  • c.  on the next screen fill in all information required (marked with * )
NOTE:  your new username must be in the same format as your school login - plus - on the end add these numbers:  370      ( Username examples:  georgew370  -or-  ggwashington370 )      This format allows unitedstreaming to run reports on APS usage.              *  Your password should be the same as what you use at school for ease of memorization.      *  Be sure to check the box that you agree to terms.        *  The newsletter is good if you want update emails each time they add new video or website content.      *  Click on Continue when you are finished and WAIT — the submission process can take as long as 2 minutes depending on how busy the network is.
  • d.  The next page you see should be your home page to UnitedStreaming.
  • e.  On the left side you can browse content by Subject/Grade; by Grade; or do a Curriculum Standards Search.
      2.  Besides videos and other images available for download there is also a “Teacher Center” (click on link at the top of the page, just to the right of center) where you can find:
  • Assignment Builder
  • Quiz Builder
  • Writing Prompt Builder
  • Calendar
  • Lesson Plan Library and other very useful tools.
     3. Students and parents/guardians of students use the following login information:              Username = students370            Password = student   Now that we all have a username and password to UnitedStreaming let’s talk about what we do next.  But first some rules:  Rule 1.  Never play a video or video segment across the network.  The video could be choppy at best.  Play videos locally from the desktop or CD. Rule 2.  Download a video or video segment before school starts, after school is over, or at home.  Downloading videos during school time can bring the network to a standstill.         4.  At the UnitedStreaming homepage use the menus on the left side of the page to browse different subject areas.
  • a.  click on any subject area
  • b.  at the next page, on the left side, click on appropriate topic to “Narrow My Results”
  • c.  on the next page (again on the left side) shows how many videos, images, articles, etc that are available on United Streaming.
  • d.  from this point click on “Images” to get a listing of all images available on that subject
  • e.  the next page is an opportunity to VIEW different sizes of the image or ADD this image to MY CONTENT library for reference later.
  • f.  to download the image -
  •            1. pick the preview for the size needed
  •            2. right-click on image
  •            3. select Save Picture As…
  •            4. at the next screen select the destination for the image to be saved (such as Desktop or W:\ folder on the server)
  •           5. the image can now be used on a quiz, worksheet, presentation, etc.
        5.  To Save A Video –   DO NOT STREAM VIDEOS REAL TIME ACROSS THE NETWORK FOR CLASSROOM VIEWING — always save the video to your computer or burn it to CD, and then show it to the group.
  • a.  click on any subject area
  • b.  at the next page, on the left side, click on appropriate topic to Narrow My Results
  • c.  on the next page (again on the left side) is how many videos, images, articles, etc that are available on United Streaming.
  • d.  from this point click on ”Full Videos” to get a listing of all videos available on that subject
  • e.  on this page is a list of Full Videos, their length (in HH:MM:SS) and a short description.     f.  to download a full video or get a specific segment of the video - click on the title of the video of choice.
NOTE:  MOST OF the time individual segments will be all that is needed for a class rather than trying to show a full video to get the one piece of information that is really needed.
  •  g.  on the top, right-side of this next page are tabs where you can see:
  •           * Segments tab where you can browse the various segments that make up the full video.               There is also a short narrative describing the content of each segment.
  •           * Citations - info on how to cite the work in papers
  •           * Related material - as it applies to curriculum standards; a quiz; and a teacher’s guide
  • h.       before downloading a video or video segment, go to the lower left-hand corner of the screen and decide if you need Closed Captioning (only available when using Windows Media Player).
  • i.      to download, find this icon    (it looks like a small, blue floppy disk), right-click once on the icon, in the menu select “Save Target As…”
  • j.      your computer will now go to UnitedStreaming to get the file information (if you get a Security Warning just click “Yes”)
  • k.         you will now be asked where to save the video or segment (go ahead and save to the DESKTOP, you can move it later)
  •            i.                     at this time also pick a more meaningful file name for your downloaded video.  Most videos download with a name similar to this - chp925358_700k.asx – go ahead and change the first part but always leave the last part whether it is .asx or something else.
  •            ii.                   also at this time, if you want closed captioning, be sure and download the related file by right clicking once on    , the name may not need to be changed as these files names tend to be more related to the material.  Never change the last part that may look similar to this - .smi – or the file will be unreadable.
WARNING:   For closed captioning to work properly both the video file and the closed captioning file must be named the same & located in the same folder!!! EXAMPLE NAME:  “Sacagaweas_Final_Resting_Place.asx” & “Sacagaweas_Final_Resting_Place.smi”
  •     l.  do the same right-click for all additional videos or video segments you want to download. Teachers:  UnitedStreaming has the capability to create Assignments, Quizzes, and Writing Prompts for your respective students to login and work on.
After you create one of the above, you are given a special passcode and URL for your class to use to access the assignment or quiz.  Each student will use the passcode or URL to gain access to the assignment or quiz, and when they are finished the teacher is notified as each student completes the task assigned.          Students can utilize UnitedStreaming for research by using the student login as shown: Username = students370 Password = student        TO ARCHIVE VIDEOS   So now you have an image or video that needs to be archived.  To illustrate this process I will archive a video. My video is from the “Subject” heading of Health.  From the next page I selected “Subject” sub-heading of Tobacco. The video title I selected from the next page is “Smoking: Getting Ready To Quit”.  I did not need all segments so I downloaded:
  • “The Reasons People Smoke: Making a Plan to Quit”
  • “Picking a Quit Date:  Handling and Coping With Withdrawal”
  • “Developing Skills to Stay Quit”
If I want to view these videos in today’s classes I will save these to my Computer Desktop.  After I am done with these videos I want to Archive them for use later this year or even next year.  The archive location for videos is on the ACHS server at:Cds on ‘Chsmedia’ (N:)\Streaming Video Only\  To get there:
  • You must be logged on to the network (can you see your W: drive in the list when you open My Computer?)
  • If you haven’t already - double-click on My Computer
  • In this list find “Cds on ‘Chsmedia’ (N:)” Network Drive and double-click
  • on this next list find “Streaming Video Only” folder and double-click
  • Now find a folder for your Department - I will choose “Health”.
  • After opening the Health folder I do not see a sub-folder labeled “Tobacco” (which is my video sub-heading) so I will create one.
  • To create the folder, right-click once and select “New” in the menu.  From the next menu select “Folder”. Click once
  • The cursor will new be at the point for you to name the folder.  I named mine “Tobacco” because that’s my sub-heading under Health.
  • Double-click on the new folder.
  • Because my video was called “Smoking: Getting Ready to Quit”, I will create a folder with the same name (be sure to leave out special character such as: / | } [, etc.)  My folder name is “Smoking Getting Ready to Quit”
  • Now we just move or copy the video segments that go with that video into this folder.
  • Anyone now looking for a “Quit Smoking” video can now use this if appropriate.
