Students volunteered their time to help those who stopped by for free and low-cost health screenings and education. Some of the North Middle students participated in a demonstration showing a healthy lung - and a diseased lung after 20 years of smoking.

The event supports a program new to North Middle School this year: the Academy of Health Sciences and Technology. The new curriculum falls under a $3.9 million Aurora LIGHTS grant, which is shining the light on health sciences and creating a pathway that leads students into health care professions. Those involved in the program include APS, the University of Colorado Denver Anschutz Medical Campus, Community College of Aurora, Metropolitan Community Provider Network, the Colorado Area Health Education Center System, and the Central Colorado Area Health Education Center.

Social Studies classes from North were invited to attend an open house at the Pepsi Center. The Democrats' national convention is scheduled for the week of August 25th and we got a sneak peek at the preparations for the event. Eighth graders were given an official welcome and an overview of the convention and its importance. We actually sat in the seats where the delegates to nominate a presidential candidate would be making their decisions. A big thanks to Mrs. Jaeger and Mrs. Schmidt for organizing this field trip for our students.

Workers from Frito Lay brought Chester-Cheetah to the school to donate these items on August 13, 2008.

Students from North along with other staff members and administrators greeted Chester at the front door as he came in to drop off his gifts. A few students took the backpacks into the school where we gave them to our Parent liaison to distribute among students. Many students witnessed this event and began asking how they could get a bag. The staff at NMS already generated a list of students names who needed supplies after the first day of school. The school then received an email from Frito Lay wanting to donate these items.
