Mission
Wheeling’s Mission
We envision Wheeling Elementary as a learning community where students use the inquiry process to become knowledgeable, develop intercultural understandings, and become active, caring and lifelong learners.
Wheeling Elementary School is a “Community of Learners.” The staff is committed to working with our families to help each and every student reach their potential. Wheeling is currently a candidate school for the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program. This program is a comprehensive approach to teaching and learning which provides an international curriculum model that fosters the development of the whole child. At the heart of the program is a commitment to inquiry as a vehicle for learning. Teachers and students use six key questions to structure the six units of inquiry. The themes are:
- Who we are
- Where we are in place and time
- How we express ourselves
- How the world works
- How we organize ourselves
- How we share the planet
In addition, the program aims to develop characteristics in the IB Learner Profile. The Learner Profile is a set of ideas that can inspire, motivate and focus the work of teachers and students. The following characteristics define the type of learner our students strive to become:
- Inquirers
- Thinkers
- Communicators
- Risk Takers
- Knowledgeable
- Principled
- Caring
- Open-minded
- Well-balanced
- Reflective
