On the second full day in Mexico City, we took a car ride to the mountain where it is said the when walking, the indian Juan Diego saw the Virgin. She would then become the Virgin of Guadalupe and hold a special place for Mexican Catholics. Later, Pope John Paul would make Juan Diego into a Saint. The basilica is also located on these grounds. There is much history on this mountain and if interested, I would encourage you to look more into it. It is believed that this mountain was also special to the Aztecs.

We stayed with Martin’s sister, Juana, for the first 4 days. She lives in one of the many neighborhoods of the city. It is about 30 minutes east of the airport on a good traffic day. It is alot closer than the house where Martin’s parents lived before they died. It usually took us at least an hour and a half on a good traffic day to get there. The pictures show Alex was happy to be off the plane and playing with some of his cousins for the first time.

The attached two pictures were taken from the airplane on landing. I didn’t have a window seat, so I had to asked someone to take these pictures for me.
