East Middle School 6th grade literacy

What should my child bring home?

The purpose of the Reader’s Writer’s Workshop is to provide your student with time to read and write in class. This allows us time to assist and conference with your student. Usually, homework will only occur if your student has spent more time talking in class and not enough time working. However, there may be times when your student feels that they want to work at home - that is great. If your are ever concerned please email us.

We do ask that you encourage your student to read, something, every night. Research has show that they more students read, the better they become at comprehending the English language and the greater the vocabulary base.

If your family has a computer, it is acceptable to us if they want to type their written work. We just ask that they print it every night and bring it to class or to email the file to us and we will allow them to print it at school.

Writing - First Free Choice

We are in the process of teaching the habits of a proficient reader and writer. As a writer, students have brainstormed some ’seed ideas’ for writing. These are ideas that they feel strongly about writing. They have now began to plan and draft their first free choice piece. Over the next few weeks students will have the opportunity to work on several free choice pieces in different genres. Your student has the time to do this at school and may or may not choose to bring their writing journal home to work on.

Reader’s Response

Students are expected to read independently everyday. While they are reading they are taking notes, in their reading journal, on what they read so that once a week they can write a response about what they read - showing how they interact with their book. Currently, our focus is on how to summarize: If they are reading fiction they are to state the Who, What, Where, When - if their fictional story lends itself to those questions. If they are reading non fiction they are to identify some facts they have learned, which one they enjoyed learning the most, and what they thought of the book. These responses are written in a letter format.

Welcome

Welcome,

Mrs. Lord Anderson and Ms. Amundson are thrilled with the opportunity to help your student grow into their potential as Readers and Writers. We will do all that we can to help them explore the written word both in books and in their writings.

Stay tuned - we hope to share their work online with you.
