Hints For Teachers
*Read the teacher’s guide carefully.
*Contact the department chairperson for the materials that are to be used.
*Familiarize yourself thoroughly with the objectives of the text and the district.
*Create an atmosphere representing the culture through the use of bulletin boards, posters, pictures, etc.
*Plan a little more instruction than you can cover in one class period and remain flexible in your planning.
*Keep the pace of the lesson very brisk with variety.
*Promote oral proficiency by providing warm-up exercises to lead pupils into the lessons.
*Teach vocabulary items as equipment necessary to everyday situations.
*Give simple directions in the target language as much as possible.
*Establish from the first day classroom rules and procedures for attendence, homework, make-up and general behavior.
*Prepare a seating plan which best fits your needs, but also reflects the individual needs of pupils.
*Vary pupil seating periodically.
*Walk to various parts of the room as you present the lesson.
*Call on individual pupils from different parts of the room, ensuring participation by all.
*Allow pupils to participate actively in preparing instructional materials.
*Encourage the “buddy system: where appropriate, allosing more able pupils to work with slower learners.
*Encourage and praise pupils.
*Give many examples of new structures and vocabulary.
*Use numerous audiovisual aids to ensure comprehension and to help sustain pupil interest.
*Make reasonable demands on pupils.
*Be fair and consisten.
*Return graded assignments and tests promptly.
